Media Server - Subtitle Edit

Looks like a program used to make your own Subtitle files. Tho some websites the program is capable of pulling them from the mkv file.

Creating Subtitle Files from an MKV

  • Start Subtitle Edit
  • File > Import > Subtitle from video file… > (Or drag the mkv file into the program)(Takes a minute for the program to load the mkv file)
Takes about a minute to load
  • If you get a popup ‘Choose Subtitle from Matroska File’
    • Codec Styles:
    • V_VOBSUB? - a Graphics format. For Emby, I think you’ll need to convert this into a text file (S_Text/UTF8)
    • S_Text/UTF8 - Pick this - it’s fast
  • File > Save as… > Save as a .srt file

VobSub formatted files

  • If you get Import/OCR VobSub - I think this graphics. Click the Start OCR button
    • This will use an OCR to read graphics and convert them to text.
    • For Bird On A Wire - there are 1754 subtitles. 4/13 - the program did not translates spaces. So “No Suitcase, huh?” becomes “Nosuitecase, huh?” I think this more annoying than helpful. so I dont turn these into subtitles.
    • For Lethal Weapon 1 - the OCR kept pausing asking me to translate some of the graphic’s into Text. Also It did not recognize spaces.
  • VobSub gives you a choice of multiple OCR’s. I found good success with Tesseract v3.05.01 but I am still learning.
  • the gap between worlds - default was 8. That almost never worked and I usually had to change it to 6.

Q: What if there are 2 tracks of audio?
A: you can only pick one - pick the first
