Handbrake is a tool which will read an MKV file and create an MP4 file used by the media servers.
It takes 10-15 minutes to pull the video out of the MKV of a DVD file.
One Note: The MKV file is around 4-5gb. The MP4 file is around 1.2gb. This is because the video is compressed. Pro: I save 2-3gb, Con: I lose quality.
Pro’s
- It works.
- it is free. (so far)
- It’s easy to use. (1) Open Program, (2) Click the Open Source button, (3) drag an MKV file into the drop zone. (4) specify the save as - the directory and filename. (5) click ‘add to queue’ (7) repeat for each file. (8) On the Queue page, click Start Queue (if it asn’t already started)0
Con’s
- no feedback after clicking the ‘Add to Queue’ button.
- 10-15 minutes to rip a MKV to a MP4. (actually for the amount of data, 10-15 minutes is pretty fast)
- I wish it would remember the Save As directory.
- Instructions indicate it can read a DVD. I did not find this to be the case, but I didn’t research the cause.
Summary
Great program.
