I found Genie Timeline Professional back in 2017.
I liked the idea. There’s a queue containing a list of files to backup. Every time a file is changed, it’s added to the queue. Meanwhile files are popped off the queue and then back’ed up. In theory I could perform a restore back to a certain time.
For some reason, which I cannot recall why, I stopped using this program. Probably because when I switched from Windows 10 to Windows 11 on a new computer, I never installed the backup program.
Last Jan (15th) 2024, to be precise I had a thought! I never configured the Backup on my computer.
So, I purchased Genie Timeline Professional 10, and started the backup.
All of my data is on an external hard drive (the E drive), and I decided to back that up to the F drive, another external hard drive. It did a scan and found over 3 million files! It took over a day to complete the scan. Finally, when the scan was completed, it started backing up files. The queue shows backed up 10,000 of 3 million. I am enjoying watch the counter go. I figure this will take about a week to get my first backup made. Then the changes since then will be recorded. Pretty cool.
One day I was at 257,004 of 3.1 million. And it number quit incrementing. I played with the settings (I’m not sure what I did) and the backup started back up.
Around 280,000 there was another lockup. I would play with it again, and it would go a little further.
Today (March 17 - over 60 days later) 1,213,004 files have been backed up. But it’s locked up and I cannot get the backup to restart.
I find great improvements in the bahavior of this program when I restart the computer. It will go much further and run for possibly 1-2 days before locking up again. When I restart the computer, and then start Genie, the first thing it does is display it’s user interface. It reports that it has hacked up 1,213,004 files. Then it computes a list of files needing to be backed up.
So far I have gotten a third of my E drive backed up.
I’ve come to the conclusion that, I don’t think this specific version will work on my computer. Likely if a Genie Timeline Professional 11 is released. I’ll give it a try, since I do like the concepts behind this program.
